My running May 2008 till now...

So I figured that since I don't often write on this blog, and I wanted to, I might as well force myself to log on once and a while by addressing a subject that I deal with, well every day.

As some of you may know I am a runner. In high school I was a miler on the track and covered the 5k for the hill and dale (that's cross country). Upon entrance to college I specialized in the 3k Steeplechase on the track and ran the 8k (about 5 miles for those of you who paid no attention in physics while they went over conversions) for XC. Any who as I matured as a runner I began to think that I may actually have a chance at making it big despite being a Division III NCAA athlete; making my chances pretty slim. The only people to have done so in distances in the past... oh 5 years or so have been Ryan Bak, Nick Symmonds and my neighborhood Sagehen, Will Leer. If you actually want to do the research be my guess, but essentially they were all NCAA champions and the latter two ran at USATF outdoor championships while still in college, and once out finished 1st and 4th in the 800m and 1500m respectively, (goes for list of names as well). Also Yuot is up there too, as is Moen from Wartburg, but lets pretend they don't exist...or they do and they were also NCAA champs. Moving on...

Despite the fact that my chances are slim of ever getting anything more than a few hundred dollars in prize money and maybe a small club sponsorship I have decided to go for it and try and get that bling, no matter how small said bling may be. You see I have realized that it has always been my dream to become a professional athlete and I have never been happier than when I have been training and surround by fellow athletes in competition.

I have been going over this idea since I graduated this past May just over 6 months ago. Over this past summer I put together a lame attempt at the marathon, posting a time of 2:48 good enough for 20th at the SF marathon and a finish worthy of the SF Chronicle's sports section. I did this off 60 miles a week, which in terms of marathon prep is dismal. A few weeks later I was a member of the CMS Alumni team up at the annual Nike Hood to Coast (H2C) where I averaged just under 5:30 per mile on my legs which totaled over 20 miles, plus my warm ups and cool downs.

All in all H2C and SFM were a lot of fun and though I didn't really train for either I was satisfied with my performances, but not thrilled. In September I began coaching CVHS's XC team. I decided after a 2 mile "coaches" race where I took 2nd beating an old DLS rivial that I would just remain in shape during the season so that I could focus on my team, and workout with them. By December and over a year without more than 2 days off I decided it was time to put an end to running.

And of course by "end" I mean that I needed a week off of no running and then I would begin building base.

So that puts me to today.  I am currently one week into my base for the spring track season. From here on out I will be logging my runs here. All the extra data tidbits such as temperature, my weight, my pulse, etc will not be posted however I will put up distance, time, pace, and a recap of the run. Also any other thoughts I may have about anything.

My next post will be just that as well as a list of goals I am looking to accomplish this spring.
